Areas of Practice

Schafer & Schafer has extensive experience handling a wide variety of legal matters, at the advisory, trial, and appellate levels. Regardless of the type of case, every one of our clients receives personal attention, along with vigorous and experienced advocacy. We represent and advise clients in the following areas:

Insurance Law - Our attorneys represent clients in insurance matters, including the defense of personal injury cases, coverage disputes, and transactions involving insurance and reinsurance companies. We have served as counsel to major national and international companies.

Business and Commercial Law - We provide a wide variety of services to our business clients from assisting in selecting the type of organizational entity under which to operate, preparation of agreements, sale and purchase of businesses, employee relations, and dissolution.

Business Organizations - The form of business chosen for a business entity potentially affects every aspect of its operations. Our firm assists our clients in formation and business planning, in deciding whether they want to operate as a closely held business, limited liability company, partnership, or corporation. We advise our clients about directors' and officers' liability, dissolution, joint ventures, business successions, and shareholders' rights.

Estate Planning - Our firm handles a variety of estate planning matters, including planning for the distribution of an individual's property at his or her death and preparation of wills and trusts, taxes, insurance, and property so as to gain the maximum benefit of all laws, while, at the same time, accomplishing the person's wishes.

Successions - There are lawyers in our firm who are knowledgeable in successions, both testate and intestate, and the administration of each. Individual state laws control the validity of wills and the manner in which a decedent's property devolves upon his/her death to his/her heirs and legatees. Because of recent and significant changes in Louisiana law on these subjects, it is important to consult an attorney who maintains a current knowledge of these laws and never loses sight of practical concerns and the needs of surviving relatives, heirs, and legatees.

Litigation and Appeals - Our firm has tried numerous judge and jury trials, ranging from one day to thirteen weeks, in State and Federal courts. This representation does not end with the rendition of a judgment at the trial level. Our firm has considerable experience in representing our clients through the appellate process, both before state and federal courts of appeal, the Louisiana Supreme Court, and the United States Supreme Court. Additionally, we regularly represent clients in mediation in an attempt to resolve disputes in a cost-efficient manner.

Personal Injury - Our firm represents individuals involved in controversies alleging a wrong or damage to another's person, rights, reputation, or property resulting from events or activities such as automobile accidents, defective products, infliction of emotional distress, intentional misconduct, and negligence.
